Cycling Back Roads

a tanka sequence

at sunrise
the grass slick with dew
we leave
a silver trail
tracing of our passage

on the bitumen
past the crystal trumpeter
pedalling left
towards Lake Galilee
among magpie choristers

bloodwoods
edge the unpaved road
crowded with wattle
and golden banksia…
their flowers scent the air

cycling on
a rutted gravel track
he says
we’ve missed the turnoff
I admire the view silently
