The Kelpies

by Daphne Harrison

Before railways and highways,
Waterways moved life across the land
Taking the slow straight path.

Here in a valley near the highway
The heads of heroes rise from still water
And shine under a grey lowland sky.

The Kelpies dream of long level days
Walking beside water, always forward
Rising or falling by stepped locks
Hearing quiet voices softly guiding
The rituals of work for men and horses.
