Sojourn to the Underworld

by MICHELLE KANEVSKY

Hell lures you through the door with promises of cheap rooms,
Then smacks you with resort fees.

Campervan melting in the car park,
Along with our morals.

Neon signs winking:
Welcome to Las Vegas.

It’s like a cheesy movie
The actors speak their lines on cue:
“What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas”
“a city that never sleeps”
“every night a new adventure”
They hardly know they’re acting.

A day-less, time-less place.
Tactfully clockless casinos
So kind as not to remind you,
You’ve been losing money all night.

There is no Godhead here,
But there is a guy giving God head
In a dirty bathroom stall.

Sensual self-indulgence,
Of seven deadly sins,
All on the menu
In this evening’s dark delights.

Strip malls and strippers
Bawdy saints of St Laurent and Prada –
Pagan Gods and Devils in disguise.
Bacchanal buffets at Caesar’s,
Every hour is Happy Hour
The wings are 2 for 1.
